Firefox & Google Chrome Favourite Manga Dragon Ball	Hi there, I'm making this topic because I don't agree with Charles Darwin being at #1 in the "Discovery Channel - Top Ten Discoveries". Don't get me wrong, I love Darwin's theory and his ideas, but disagree with him being at #1 with the theory of evolution. I think Einstein's theory of General relativity deserves #1 spot because of; 1. Brilliant and simple explanation of gravity that changed the idea of how scientists and everyday people view the world. 2. Einstein's idea is still relevant in today's physics where you have Scientists - Alan Guth, Lawrence Krauss, Witten, Steven Weinberg and Stephen Hawking all try to create new ideas such as M-theory or quantum gravity that incorporates Einstein's theory. 3. Einstein still had a vital role (Photoelectric effect) to play in the most successful theory to mankind - quantum mechanics. Anyway, in your opinion what do you think is the most successful theory and do you agree with the top ten list by Discovery Channel? Edited by olliebalollie, Oct 21 2014, 01:19 AM.

Firefox Favourite Manga Dragonball	Yeah that's bulls*** putting Darwin at number one. I'm not sure how knowledge of evolutionary science actually helps mankind. Especially his basic understanding of the facts which have been greatly expanded upon by much better scientists than he was. Einstein is the second most important scientist in history next to Newton. If anyone says Stephen Hawking, well a scientist on tv reckoned that he wasn't even one of the top ten most important scientists alive today, let alone of all time. I think that the internet is the greatest invention however. It made the world incredibly tiny over a very short period of time and things can now be achieved almost instantly when in the past they might take several weeks.

I like your list If this is going to be about importance, then the transistor should be near the top. Nearly everything (electronics) that we have today owe it's existence to the transistor. I want to reply to your comment about Einstein being wrong. We have to revise the famous statement "Nothing can go faster than the speed of light." Now, what we have to say is "No useable information can travel faster than the speed of light." So in some sense Einstein still has the last laugh.

Evolution has helped us understand the world to a much larger extend. Its completely changed the way we view the world.

It's actually still under heavy debate in America. I think equal rights for blacks or equal rights for women has been way more important.

VACCINES????? designing drugs?????? evolving bacteria anyone????? their resistance to antibiotics?? massive impact on religion (rejected p much all of creationism) and morals (we're still animals regardless of how far we've come) idk if there are other topics that unify biology, but darwin's theory of evolution via natural selection is one of them. genetics as a field probably wouldnt even be around, or if it was then it'd be completely different. think about how much impact that's had on society and other fields. no impact on mankind my arse. edit: just a lil tidbit of information: the theory of evolution wasnt darwin's. there were other scientists at the time who'd already come to the same conclusion. the theory of evolution via natural selection is what darwin's famous for. Evolution was discovered before DNA, before we had any knowledge on genetics. Evolution gave us the idea that DNA could exist, its discovery took place way earlier because of evolution.

Christianity Favourite Manga The Bible	and what do viruses and bacteria do? evolve. hence why for some illnesses such as the flu new vaccines have to be created every year to fight againts new strains. vaccines cant even be made against a lot of viruses, but they can still be observed and scientists can see how they evolve in order to better understand the virus. edit: no opinion on DNA since i see the two as supplementary rather than in opposition of each other.
